The Kearney Area Brewers hosted the 2011 AHA Learn to Homebrew Day on November 5. Over 25 people attended again this year. There were some new faces interested in learning to homebrew. The weather was a bit chilly and quite windy but it didn’t effect our brewing. Four brews were made, 1 all-grain and 3 extract. As always the food was outstanding! It was another successful club gathering! Cheers!!!
On Saturday July 23, 2011 the Buffalo County Fair Homebrew Competition was held at Thunderhead Brewing Co. This year there were 85 Beer & Mead entries and 9 Wine entries for a total of 94, a new record. The entries were all top notch. A couple of the judges mentioned that this was the best beer they have judged in a competition. Picking a Best of Show for Beer was quite a challenge for sure but ultimately Kim Herald walked away with those honors. Additionally, Emmett Maul received the Best of Show for Mead and Jason Meyer received Best of Show for Wine. Congratulations to them!
On Saturday May 14, 2011 members of the Kearney Area Brewers, along with friends, gathered at Emmett Maul’s garage for the annual AHA BIG BREW. Five batches of beer were made. Two All-Grain & three Extracts.
The Kearney Area Brewers hosted the 2010 AHA Learn to Homebrew Day on November 6. Over 25 people attended. We had quite a few interested in learning to brew. The weather was very accommodating with a high of ~70F and clear blue skies. Four brews were made, 3 all-grain and 1 extract. Adam debuted his new all electric brew system. With a little tweaking a nice Munich & Rye Pale Ale was born. There were enough runnings from the mash to make another beer, with a little help from some LME. We’ll have to see which one turns out better. 🙂 All in all we had a great day…. Cheers!!!
Tom Hamilton and Dave Stewart are awarded top honors at the 2010 Nebraska State Fair. Tom received Best of Show – Ale and Dave received Best of Show – Lager. Congrats to both, as well as a great showing for the club. Cheers!!!

Here are a few pics of the event as it unraveled. No, Trevor didn’t drink all those beers, but he did try each & every one.
On Saturday May 1, 2010 members of the Kearney Area Brewers gathered at Emmett Maul’s garage for the annual AHA BIG BREW. Four batches of beer were made including the AHA proposed 80/- & American wheat. It was proven once again that the KAB members can cook as well as they can brew. A toast was made at high noon to homebrewing and the happiness it brings to us all & Greg Noonan, who gave so much to the homebrewing community. Greg passed away last fall at the age of 58 after a short battle with cancer.
Four members of the club made the journey to Lincoln for the 2010 Nebraska Shootout. Monty, Doug, Emmett & Tom. Dave & Patty met us there briefly before heading off to their grandson’s baseball game. We had a great time visiting with members of the other Nebraska Brew Clubs. KUDOS to the Lincoln Lagers, The Bricktop and Jason McLaughlin for hosting this great event!!
In the end we walked away with two 2nd places, but not enough to bring home the hardware. Tom received a 2nd place for his Weissbier & Smoked Robust Porter. We also enjoyed a great potluck. Emmett’s Sauerkraut dish was a big hit and everyone wanted the recipe. Here are a few pics from the competition.
Tiny Tim won top honors with the Gold and Golden Frau followed right behind with the silver in the Specialty/Open Division. Both are braggots, which is mead made with grain. Congrats to Thunderhead!!!
