02/15/2017

Location: The Gun Barn

Meeting was called to order with the traditional “What’s Brewing.” Dave S. won for the most going on….

Old Business:

-Dues for 2017 are now due, please pay Doug.

-Treasury report was given.

-Kearney Hub story has been difficult to get done. Trying again this Saturday. Dave S. handling this.

-County Fair: Again, we need to really push for great participation this year from our own club and others as well. Drop off for entries will be at the Count Fair office this year. See website for full rules.

New Business:

-Grant mentioned there is a great National Geographic article on alcohol that we all should take the time to read.

-Nebraska Shootout was discussed at length:

-Ken commented that he was guaranteed to get feedback on entries. We had trouble with this the last time entries were submitted.

-Nebraska Grown Hops is the theme.

-There is a club round and a shootout (individual round).

-Motion was made to have the club pay for the club entries. Motion passed.

-Ken will talk to Trevor to see if he will judge our club entries before the competition deadline.

-The hops and lemon peel that Thunderhead gifted the club was distributed.

– Dave S. invited everyone to the Grand Iland club meeting. Meeting is February 21st, 7:00pm in Grand Island. Contact Dave S. for more information.

Next Meeting:

– Next meeting will be March 14th and will be held at Emmett’s.

– 50/50 was held, Ken won, donated all winnings back to club.

Location: Zack’s Home – Christmas Party
Meeting was called to order with the traditional “What’s Brewing.”
Old Business:
-Dues for 2017 are now due, please pay Doug.

-Treasury report was given: $342.21

New Business:
-Thanks to Zack for hosting the Christmas party tonight and thanks for the food (it was very good).

-Monty made a motion to keep existing officers for 2017, Dave S. seconded. All members in attendance voted yes, except for the existing officers….motion passed.

-County fair was discussed. We as a club need to push to advertise and build this event back up. Last year we had very few entries. We need to keep this event going and without entries we risk losing this event. Expect many reminders regarding this topic.

-Kearney Hub wants to do a story on the Club again with a video this time. Ken will forward the contact info to the Hub of those that are interested in helping with this request.

-Dave S. made a motion to pay Zack for the food at tonight’s party, Doug seconded. Motion passed. We will keep leftovers from tonight for the next brew event.

Next Meeting:
-A motion was made to move the February meeting to the 15th to avoid having the meeting on Valentine’s Day. Doug made the motion, Dave S. seconded. Motion passed.

-February meeting will be held at 22035 Custer Road, Amherst NE. Wednesday, February 15th, at 7:30 PM.

Zack made a motion to close the meeting, meeting closed.

November 2016

No official meeting was held in November as we celebrated Learn to Homebrew Day.


10/11/2016

Location: Jason M’s home.

Meeting was called to order with the traditional “What’s Brewing.”

Treasury report was given: $290.89.

– Fair topics:

-Motion was made by Jason to hold the competition at the fair again this year, motions seconded and passed.

-Doug motioned to have the entry fee be $2 per entry, Dave seconded. Motion passed.

-Motion was made for Jason to redo the wine categories, seconded and passed.

-Two committees will be formed: Judging and Advertising. Members to be determined.

-Learn to Homebrew day will be November 5th. Meet in Axtell, 10am bring a side dish to share. Thunderhead needs us to be out by 5pm.

-Jason will order and pick up (and cook) brats from Oxford locker for the event. Club will purchase.

-50/50 was held and won by Doug. Doug donated back to club.

First Saturday in May (May 3rd). Brats will be served; everyone is to bring a side dish to share.

Meeting was called to order with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Treasury report was given.

Some money was spent on the County Fair Judging event since last meeting.

Old Business:
– No official meeting was held in August due to lack of members present.
– Received a Thank You note from the fair for our involvement.
– County Fair had great involvement and was a great event again this year.

New Business:
-Learn to homebrew day will be November 2nd.
-Emmett’s Garage will be location.

$357.68 was spent on last month’s meeting in Axtel for Homebrew Day.

Entries are accepted from June 28th to July 8th.
Doug sent e-mail to several vendors asking for donations.
Northern Brewer has responded and will donate.
Kirk’s will also give some prizes.

AHA National Homebrew Day – May 4th in Axtell. Topics discussed:
Event went very well, food was great.

New Business:
Motion made for giving gift to Trevor for his work and having us as guests. Agreed on gift card to Red Lobster.

– The topic of officer nominations from last meeting was reviewed and confirmed. The following is a list of current officers:

Competition Committee:
– Nebraska shootout is Sunday April 28th at the Crescent Moon in Omaha. The topic of if we would have enough entries to both Trevor with judging them beforehand was discussed. There is a max of 2 entries per category. Decision was made that Trevor would stop by if we asked him to and that all who wish to enter should let the group know so that it could be organized.
– County Fair. Fair is scheduled for July 24th through July 30th. Our judging is normally held 1 week before. July 13th was settled upon as the date as July 20th is Cruze night. Motion to hold the judging at the Loft inside Cunningham’s was made and approved. Emmet will talk to them and let them know the date.

New Business:
– AHA National Homebrew Day – May 4th – Trevor has offered to host in Axtel and will provide wort to anyone interested. Grain bill for this donation was confirmed as:
– 50% Wheat
– 50% Pilsner
– Gravity of 1.050
– A motion to provide the food for that day was made by Emmet and seconded by Shaun. Tom has previously offered to cook on site in Axtell. Ribs were discussed at length.
– A mention of inviting the Rotary Club was mentioned and that we would also provide food to them if they attend.

Forum was held.

– March 12th at Emmet’s home, 7:30 pm.

50/50 raffle was won by Ken and the pot was donated to the club minus his $1 entry fee.

President Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Competition Committee:
– The topic of the county fair judging location was talked about. The Eagle’s Club was mentioned as a possible location and they have given us permission to hold it there. No decision was made but all were in agreement that the Eagle’s Club would be a good place to try.

Honors Committee:
No report.

Old Business:
– Club shirts – Ken brought some shirts for all to look at.
– Ken mentioned that the prices for the shirts were $25 for a polo type and $22 for the work shirt type.
– If anyone wishes to order please contact Ken Anderson.

New Business:
– Nomination of officers. Ken nominated that all current officers keep their current spots. The motion was seconded and the motion passed.
– Mention of the responsibility of organizing food for meetings would be left to the VP.
– Big Brew Day – May 4th – Trevor has offered to host in Axtel and will provide wort to anyone interested. All members agreed this would be a great idea. Tom will cook meat.
– Ken brought some videos of the new canning line in Axtel.

President Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Competition Committee:
– There are 4 gift cards left from the fair competition. A motion was made and seconded to raffle these off during the upcoming Learn to Home Brew Day. The tickets will be used to organize the raffle.
– It was also mentioned that Tom had won Best in Show at the State Fair for a Bohemian Pilsner with Jalapeno.

Old Business:
– Club shirts – Ken brought some samples of the different kind of shirts that were available from Joanie. The samples were passed around and looked at by all present.
– Ken agreed to e-mail Joanie the logo from the website.
– We will invite Joanie to attend the Learn to Homebrew Day so that we can get orders and sizing to her.

New Business:
– Learn to Homebrew Day is November 3rd, 2012.
– A meeting will be held at Emmett’s Garage at 10 am with people brewing beer if they wish.
– Tom will cook meat and everyone is invited to bring a side dish.
– Ken will get posters distributed to let the community know about the event.
– Emmett will check on plates etc that the club has purchased in the past.

– Monty talked about his garage door opener grain mill.

President Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Competition Committee:
The Buffalo County Fair Beer/Mead/Wine Competition went very well. Awards that were won by those in attendance were handed out. Competition had a good number of entries. Awards won by the club members in attendance were also read out loud by the group.

Old Business:
– Club shirts – Jason brought sample embroidery of the club logo that was created by Cabela’s for review. There was no cost for this sample to be created. Decision was made to keep the business local and work with Joanie to get some samples to bring to the next meeting.

New Business:
-The topic of a cookout at some point was mentioned. There is a good amount of money in the treasury. Discussion was tabled until next meeting.

Open Forum
– Craig (guest) is new to beer making and was looking for general tips. Tips and advice was offered from the group.
– Talk about different propane regulators was also had.
– Carol Jean made mention of her wish for someone to make a good cyser.

Next Meeting:
– Tuesday 9/11/12 at Emmett’s home.

June15th, 2012

President Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 7:13 PM.

Competition Committee:

-There have been a few entries so far.
-This will be a BJCP Sanctioned event.

Old Business:
– Buffalo County Fair Beer/Mead/Wine Competition entry deadline is July 9th with the Judging on the 14th.
– There was no formal meeting held in May but the event at Emmett & Carol Jean’s Home during the AHA Big Brew Day was fun and well attended.

New Business:
-Ron Phillips made mention that Old Chicago had offered a meeting room to the club. The topic was discussed. Old Chicago does have a private room that would work well for a meeting. The topic of Old Chicago doing a private tap was discussed and it is being investigated as to if the club would be allowed to bring our own home brew into Old Chicago. A motion was made by Ron to plan this meeting for a future date, the motion was seconded by Tom and the motion carried. No date for this meeting has been set at this time.

– The topic of having some club shirts designed and printed was brought up. Possibly some polo type shirts. Some interest was seen in the group and Jason Meyer volunteered to investigate this topic. A report will be given at the next meeting with reguards to the findings.

– Kim & Mary Ann Herald are hosting the June KAB meeting on Friday June 15th at 6:00PM. Beer, Mead and Wine will be present along with a cream can potluck. Members are encouraged to bring a snack, side dish or desert.

New Business:
– Tom Hamilton requsted that the Secretary position he held be reassigned to another member due to the addition of duties that have occurered over the past few years. Those being the Competition Committee, Website maintenance and communications with club members and other entities. Jason Meyer was nominated as the new Secretary for the KAB.

– The AHA Big Brew Day is on May 5 this year. We will host the event at Emmett Maul’s garage starting at 10:00AM. The club will provide Rocky Mountain Oysters, Brats, buns and condiments. Members are encourged to bring a snack, side dish or desert.

Open Forum
– Monty discussed his purchase of a storage box that he modified to serve as a bottle dryer.

President Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 6:30PM with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Competition Committee:
-The 2012 Nebraska Shootout will be held in Lincoln this year at the downtown Misty’s Steakhouse/Modern Monks Brewery on Saturday, April 7th.

Rules:

Four BJCP categories have been chosen, as well as one open category “Best damn beer”. Each club is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 entries per category. Overall scoring for the categories is based on a point system. 1st place beers receive 3 points, 2nd place beers receive 2 points, and each 3rd place beers receive 1 point.

While the Best Damn Beer category does not progress to the BOS round, it is rather used to decide who wins in case of a points tie, as well as receiving the super cool rusty capper traveling trophy. The trophy will look great on any mantle.

The overall winner of BOS will receive the traveling Nebraska Shootout Cup.

Annual Holiday Celebration

Location: Mike Ripp’s home

We had a fair turnout with ~18 members & guests/spouses present. The potluck was great, topped off with pepper stout ice cream from Ken Anderson.

New Business:
-A motion to retain the current Officers was moved.

-Doug Kramer suggested a donation to a worthy cause. After some deliberation a motion was moved to contribute $50 of the club’s funds to the Kearney Goodfellows.

-The day and time for our monthly meetings was discussed and after some deliberation a motion to keep the day but change the time from 7:30PM to 6:30PM was moved. Club meetings will continue to be held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month but at 6:30PM.

– 2011 Buffalo County Fair Beer/Mead/Wine Competition – The competition was a huge success with a total of 94 entries. Many first place awards. Judges commented on the number of excellent beers in the comp. One category of 20 beers was noted to not have one brewing flaw in any of the beers. Just variances from the style.

– It was noted that the 2011 Nebraska State Fair had 24 beer entries. It was assumed that the low turnout was due to having the competition deadline occurring a month ahead of the Fair and the lack of communication to brewers.

Old Business:

– Emmett & Carol Jean Maul hosted Cruise Night on Saturday July 16. A potluck was the venue. Minimal turnout due to excessive heat.

New Business:

– Monty suggested that since we all agree that meetings at breweries do not usually work well, we come up with a short list of alternate meeting sites. After discussion, it was decided that first we will offer the coming meetings to anyone who wishes to host. If no one offers, we will try to meet at Emmett Maul’s place. If that does not work, we will go to our short list of volunteers and rotate through that list as needed. The short list for now is Monty Splitter, Kim Herald and Jason Meyer. Other names may be added if desired.

– We discussed using the braided stainless steel flexible plumbing supply tubes to batch sparge and how they may be utilized.

– Doug Kramer received a message from the Buffalo County Fair asking if we were interested in hosting the Beer/Mead/Wine competition again this year. A motion to host the competition was approved along with making it an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event

– Tom Hamilton mentioned the National Homebrew Competition. March 30 is the deadline for beer to be at the regional competition site. This year, if a site is full (750 entries) another site can be used. As of this posting the Midwest Region has 240 entries.

– Trevor Schaben judged the club’s entries for the Nebraska Shootout while the meeting was held. Results are below. During the meeting Doug Kramer received an email stating that a “Best Damn Beer” (BDB) category was added to the competition. Anyone wishing to enter into the BDB category can bring 1 bottle of each entry to Thunderhead by Saturday March 19 to be judged.

Kim Herald told us that George Weidel had been honored recently for pulling a victim from a wreck and saving his life. Shaun Clark mentioned that his wife was also present at that accident and helped George. A round of applause was given for them.

Doug Kramer & Tom Hamilton gave an update on the Buffalo County Fair Beer/Mead/Wine competition. On-line registration is working albeit a little kludgey. Entries are coming in from local brewers as well as from outside the area. We’ve received many donations for the competition as well.

New Business:
Doug Kramer, Albert Loeffelholz, Tom Hamilton and Shaun Clark will label entries & update the Contest Database on Wednesday July 21 @ 5:00PM at Thunderhead.

The Club approved payment to Doug Kramer for $17.69 for shipping of Fair donations and $20.00 for a gift certificate from Kirk’s Homebrew.

Albert Loeffelholz offered to help Kim Herald with the Mead & Wine Judging.

Discussed how to thank the Judges for their gracious contribution of time & expenses. Doug Kramer is looking into merchandise from Thunderhead and lunch after the competition.

Michael Graves is our newest Club member. He brought some of his wine for Club members to sample. Michael will be a good member if he’s anything like his wine!!!

Tom Hamilton gave a brief update on the club’s web site. Suggestion was made to change the part about interested parties from contacting club officers to the club email account instead. The Buffalo County Fair Beer/Wine/Mead competition registration isn’t ready on the Fair’s web site yet.

New Business:
President, Monty Splitter mentioned that Gary Jackson’s wife had contacted him and was grateful for the flower arrangement from the club & for the members who attended the funeral.

The AHA Big Brew Day will be on Saturday May 1 commencing at 10:00AM at Emmett Maul’s Garage. Albert Loeffelholz offered his building as a backup. The club will provide brats & buns and the club members are encouraged to bring a side dish. The Big Brew Day will double as the May club meeting as well.

Club members interested in attending the NE Shootout in Lincoln will meet at Emmett Maul’s on Saturday April 24 for a 10:00AM departure for a 12:30PM arrival at the Bricktop in Lincoln. There will be a potluck afterwards. Attending members are encouraged to bring a side dish. Winning club members from tonight’s competition can either bring their 2 entries with them to Lincoln or drop them off at Thunderhead no later than 5:00PM Friday April 23. Tom Hamilton will supply entry tags to the winners and will collect the entries to transport to Lincoln.

Old Business:
Doug Kramer & Tom Hamilton gave an update on the Buffalo County Fair (BCF) Beer/Wine/Mead competition. Doug registered the competition with the AHA/BJCP as a sanctioned event. Doug also signed the club up to use the BeerContestDB web-based system to manage Beer & Mead entries & Judges. A big THANK YOU goes to Trevor for the $50 donation to use BeerContestDB! Tom has the links set up in the KAB web site. Tom is in contact with Scott McLaughlin (Heartland Hosting) who manages & hosts the BCF web site. Scott is in the process of developing the 2010 BCF web site & will test with Tom when ready. Wine entries will be handled the same or similar to how they were done in the past since the BeerContestDB is a BJCP application which doesn’t include wine. Albert Loeffelholz visited a recent wine conference in Kearney (The NE Grape Growers/Wine Makers Conference) and came back with judge contacts & the possibility of having a amateur and commercial competition at the fair. Doug Kramer will contact Dr. Paul E. Read, Professor of Horticulture/Viticulturist at UNL about wine judging at the fair as well.

The club competition for the Nebraska Shootout (All state club competition) will be held during the April meeting on April 13, 2010 at Thunderhead. Trevor Schaben announced the judging will be based on the BJCP Style to insure the club puts forth the best beers for the Shootout competition. Only one beer is needed for each style for the club competition except for the BDB, which can be multiple different beers. Tom circulated a sample registration sheet the members will use for the club competition listing the following styles for the Shootout:
4C. Schwarzbier (Black Beer)
9E. Strong Scotch Ale
15A. Weizen/Weissbier
22B. Other Smoked Beer
Open Class “BDB” Best Damn Beer (Tiebreaker beer, does not move to BOS)
The NE Shootout will be held in Lincoln on April 24 @ 1:00PM. Judging & Potluck.

New Business:
President, Monty Splitter thanked the club members who attended Gary Jackson’s funeral last Saturday. The club ordered a plant for the funeral. Monty offered a club toast in Gary’s honor.

Doug mentioned the changes to the KAB web site that Tom recently made.

Open Forum:
A brief discussion was had regarding the use of the stainless steel braid from a water supply line to filter a mash tun runoff.

President, Monty Splitter called the meeting to order at 7:30PM with the traditional “What’s Brewing”.

Old Business:
Complimentary memberships were discussed & approved for Emmett Maul (for the use of his garage for club brews), Trevor Schaben (for the use of Thunderhead Brewery for club meetings & the Buffalo County Fair Beer/Wine/Mead judging) and Adam Daake (for the use of Platte Valley Brewery for club meetings)

Doug Kramer gave an update on the Buffalo County Fair Beer/Wine/Mead competition and circulated a copy of the proposed communication. Requested the club pay the $30 AHA/BJCP registration fee. Motion carried.

Competition Committee – Albert Loeffelholz, Doug Kramer, Tom Hamilton (BJCP) and Kim Herald (Wine & Mead)
Honors Committee – Albert Loeffelholz and Emmett Maul.

Shaun Clark proposed a different meeting night due to some members not able to attend on Tuesdays. Topic was discussed & determined that other nights of the week would have a similar or greater impact on others. The 2nd Tuesday of the month was retained.

Open Forum:
Monty Splitter discussed a new Stir Plate he recently purchased for $42.
